What students practise
Drawing starts with simple marks and shapes. Students use these building blocks to make more detailed pictures. Lessons may include:
- Lines, shapes and outlines
- Shading and light-to-dark values
- Proportion and placement
- Cartoon drawing and still life
- Composition: how parts of a picture fit together
Projects give students a reason to try each skill. The teacher can guide a student through the steps and help them make choices about their work.
For beginners and returning artists
Children do not need previous art experience to start. Students can work at their own skill level in a small group. A beginner can learn how to plan a drawing, while a returning student can keep practising skills through new projects.
Families can read more about what children learn in art lessons and see how the program works for children ages 5–7 or children ages 7–11.
